Overviews

Far Western University (FWU) was established in 2010 by the Act of the Parliament as a government funded national university to function as a prime academic institution in the country in terms of academic excellence, research-based education, community engagement and partnership.

The central office of the university is located at Bhimdatta Municipality of Kanchanpur district, Far West Province, Nepal. The strategic location of the University Central Campus and its constituent campuses at the Far West Province gives an access to local people to higher education and provides an opportunity for the overall development of the region.

FWU has been fulfilling its responsibility of making higher education accessible to the people of this region through its constituent campuses in the nine districts of Far West Province. Adopting the principle of the "right to education and accessibility of higher education to deserving students," Far Western University has been delivering diverse educational programs, both in undergraduate and graduate level, through six faculties including Humanities and Social Sciences, Education, Management, Science and Technology, Engineering, and Agriculture. The university follows a semester academic calendar. The undergraduate courses and graduate courses of the university are of four-year duration and two-year duration respectively. The university has started MPhil and PhD research degrees since February 2021.

Far Western University is engaged in introducing new curricula, revisiting pedagogy, strengthening the existing academic programs, diversifying bachelor’s degree programs and introducing course-based MPhil and PhD degrees.  To move forward in achieving academic excellence and becoming one of the best institutions in the nation, a comprehensive strategic document has been prepared to support the mission and vision of the university.

Currently, Far Western University has a total of 1166 staff (965 teaching and 201 non- teaching) from different academic background and diverse geographical location. About 10097 students from different academic and socio-economic background and especially from the diverse geography of nine districts of Far Western region are studying in the various faculties at the Far Western University. The university has been planning to expand academic programs. It has also signed MoU with different national and international academic institutions, Universities, local and provincial governmental organizations and international research and development organizations.
